The Kingdom of Poland was always famous for really good bands – in Black Metal, as well as in other Metal directions. We don`t know too much about success in other genres of music in this land, but some experimental projects have also achieved considerable fame which may be evidence of the existence of other decent underground music in this country. And today we have the opportunity to see the new band, which combines both Black Metal, and Post\Sludge Metal in the context of a single united musical material. We will talk about band called Hegemone and their debut album «Luminosity», which was released in 2014. Typically, our zine seeks to examine the branch of only "clean" styles of Black Metal, or maybe only extreme symbioses. But stuff, which «Luminosity» represent, intrigued and interested us so much that we decided to make an exception for Hegemone.
Hegemone was founded in the 2010, but the current line-up, as well as band`s way vector was formed closer to 2012. «Luminosity» was recorded with this line-up: Kacper Jachimowicz (Guitars), Marcin Szpot (Bass \ Vocals), Tomasz Towpik (drums) and Jakub Kowalczyk (keys, electronics, saxophone). Jakub has left the band later and was replaced by Tomasz Stanuch. The band`s name was taken from Greek mythology: Hegemone is the Goddess of flowering. We only add that «Luminosity» was released by band itself, which is only emphasizing the status of the band as an independent from the music industry. Though nowadays this trend is not surprise for anyone.
«Luminosity» is performed in one vein, but itself it is very diverse. The compositions are unrelated through strong lyrical basis, but draw the listener in through a smooth transition from one topic to another. In the album there are two bases, which expressed in post\sludge metal and Atmospheric Black Metal respectively. And if the Post Metal style in Hegemone is expressed in highly developed complete set of subtleties and nuances of the structures, the Black Metal here is felt very shy and does not pretend for serious symbiosis with former genre. There is a lot of Post-metal material in «Durial», in a meditative «The Hunt Within», in «Lowborn», and also in the first half of «XXXIX». «Away From the Sun» and «Nightingale» are sustained in Atmospheric Black Metal vein, with a very direct and primitive riffs. A great place in music is given to the keys\electronics. This place is not the main or leading, but rather behind the scenes, and it adds to the music a considerable share of the atmosphere and semantic content. Jakub Kowalczyk is also responsible for a great saxophone in «The Hunt Within», which gives to compositions even greater detachment from reality. What is very pleasing is the presence of dense and meaningful bass in some things. A peculiar vocal reminded M. (Mgla) and Roman Saenko (Drudkh) symbosis.
Guitar sound is sufficiently dense and boomy, but clear. When there acoustic or instrumental moments start, we can hear all the nuances. When there is a metal (and especially Black Metal) riffs, distortion gives a raw and muddy sound. But speaking of mastering level, its power and depth, the «Luminosity» considerably loses in that to more notable colleagues from both stylistic directions. The more powerful sound, the stronger emotional riffs reveal themselves and the material in general. Unfortunately, in this aspect Hegemone lose to their peers. «Luminosity», from a substantive point of view is not “home made music”, but very serious album. And, though the studio Left Hand Sound has made a very significant work, for the next work of the band is more serious recording quality required, if they want to keep or even to raise their bar.
As has been previously said, «Luminosity» does not have a clear single concept. The topics of the lyrics are associated with natural philosophy, the contemplation of nature through the lens of society dullness and detachment from reality. The lyrics, tied primarily on emotions and feelings, do not contain any deep meaning and don’t narrate about anything global. And, as conformation to this fact, the volume of lyrics with each new composition is reduced, and as a result, in «XXXIX» there are only one or two words for each line of the text. And therefore, the purpose of the lyrics in Hegemone is to be the notes for the singer - no more, no less. Yes, and the material is made in such way that it can completely make it without the lyrics at all, like, for example, the composition entitled «The Hunt Within». But you can not claim the lyrical side to be bad, because it performs its task - competently weaves vocals into the music of the band.
Cover - that's what caught our attention the most. It would seem that this is just a staged photography after editor program treatment. But meanwhile, it generates a set of concrete associations and images associated with the musical content of «Luminosity». And your perception of this material partly depends on what exact image you see on the cover. Female figure dressed in dark clothes walking across the field and carrying a lamp in her hand. Whether this is a direct allusion to the Greek goddess who meets the autumn dusk, whether it is something more abstract ... Anyway, the cover is very suitable to content. But the cover - it's just a piece of the whole picture, which can be fully seen after opening booklet outwards from the title side. The design of the back of the booklet with printed lyrics is very different from the previous picture and is more like a "black ink in water". Layout is not so rich, but it gives all the necessary information and even has its conceptual design, which however has less obvious parallels with the musical content of the album.
«Luminosity» is a very good album, many of the songs from which you want to listen to more than once or twice. But nevertheless there is something fundamentally new or original here. Hegemone feel themselves comfortable in the Post Metal field, and without encountering serious obstacles, they implement many of their experiments. But Black Metal base feels very shy and quite fragmented, despite the clear desire of the band to move in this direction, expressed in a very suitable, raw and alienated sound. As for comparisons, it is obviously Cult of Luna, Altar of Plagues and, more distantly, Isis.

Польское Королевство всегда славилось хорошими бандами, что в Black Metal, что в иных Metal направлениях. Нам не слишком известны успехи в других жанрах музыки на этой земле, но экспериментальные проекты также добились немалой известности, что может быть свидетельством существования иных достойных музыкальных сцен и подземелий в этой стране. И сегодня нам представилась возможность узреть новую банду, которая сочетает в себе как Black Metal, так и Post и Sludge Metal в контексте единого музыкального материала. Речь пойдёт о Hegemone и об их дебютном альбоме «Luminosity», который вышел в 2014-ом году. Обычно наше издание старается рассматривать ветки исключительного «чистых» направлений Black Metal, ну или исключительно экстремальных симбиозов. Но материал «Luminosity» заинтриговал и заинтересовал нас настолько, что мы решили сделать для Hegemone исключение.
Hegemone был основан в 2010-ом, но текущий состав, а также вектор развития банды сформировались ближе к 2012-ому. «Luminosity» был записан в таком составе: Kacper Jachimowicz ( Гитары), Marcin Szpot (Бас\Вокал), Tomasz Towpik (ударные) и Jakub Kowalczyk (Клавиши, электроника, Саксофон). Последний покинул состав позже и был заменён Tomasz Stanuch. Название банды было взято из древнегреческой мифологии, Богиня Гегемона, покровительница цветения. А мы лишь добавим, что сам «Luminosity» был издан бандой самостоятельно, что лишь подчёркивает статус банды как независимой от музыкальной индустрии. Хотя такой тенденцией в наше время никого не удивишь.
Материал «Luminosity» хоть и выдержан в едином ключе, сам по себе весьма разнообразен. Композиции не связаны между собой прочной лирической основой, но при этом втягивают слушателя, плавно переходя от одной теме к другой. В альбоме существуют две основы, выраженные в post\sludge metal, и Atmospheric Black Metal. И если первый стиль у Hegemone выражен в весьма развитых, полных множеством тонкостей и нюансов структур, то Black Metal здесь чувствуется весьма робко и не рискует на серьёзный симбиоз с первым. Post-metal материала весьма много в «Durial», в медитативном «The Hunt Within», в «Lowborn»,и также звучат в первой половине «XXXIX».«Away From the Sun» и «Nightingale» выдержаны в Atmospheric Black Metal ключе, с весьма прямыми и примитивными риффами. Огромное место в музыке уделяется клавишам\электронике. Место это далеко не главное и не ведущее, а скорее закулисное, но при этом добавляющее в музыку весомую долю атмосферы и смысловой нагрузки. Jakub Kowalczyk также ответственен за великолепный саксофон в «The Hunt Within», который придаёт композиции ещё больший отрыв от реальности. Весьма порадовало наличие плотного и осмысленного баса в некоторых вещах. А вокал напомнил своеобразный симбиоз M. (Mgla) и Романа Саенко (Drudkh).
Звучание гитар достаточно плотное и гулкое, но при этом чёткое. Когда идут акустические или инструментальные моменты, слышны все нюансы. Когда идёт metal (и в особенности Black Metal), дисторшн даёт свою сырость и грязь. Но что касается уровня мастеринга, его мощи и глубины, то «Luminosity» в этом изрядно проигрывает своим более знатным коллегам по обоим стилистическим направлениям. Чем мощнее звучание, тем эмоциональные риффы в момент кульминации раскрывают себя и материал в целом. К сожалению, в этом Hegemone весьма проигрывают. «Luminosity», с содержательной точки зрения, - это не домашняя поделка, а весьма серьёзный альбом. И, хоть студия Left Hand Sound сделала очень значительную работу, для следующих работ коллектива требуется более серьёзная запись, если они хотят удерживать, а то и вовсе повысить свою планку.
Как уже было сказано ранее, «Luminosity» не имеет чёткую и единую концепцию. Тематика лирики связана с натурфилософией, созерцанием природы через призму серости социума и отрыва от реальности. Завязанная, прежде всего, на эмоциях и ощущениях, смысловой нагрузки лирика не несёт и ни о чём глобальном не повествует. И, как бы подтверждая этот факт, объём текстов с каждой новой композицией уменьшается, и в итоге, в том же «XXXIX» на строчку приходится одно-два слова. И поэтому, назначение лирики у Hegemone – это быть нотами для вокалиста - ни больше, ни меньше. Да и сам материал сделан так, что может вполне обходиться без лирики вовсе, о чём свидетельствует, например, композиция «The Hunt Within». Но нельзя назвать лирическую сторону плохой, ибо свою задачу она выполняет – грамотно вплетает вокальную часть к остальным музыкальным партиям.
Обложка – это то, что привлекло наше внимание больше всего. Казалось бы, что это всего лишь постановочная фотография, обработанная редактором. Но меж тем это конкретная обложка порождает множество ассоциаций и образов, связанных с музыкальным содержанием «Luminosity». Причём от того, какой именно образ вы видите, зависит частично и ваше восприятие этого материала. Облачённая в тёмную одежду, женская фигура, идущая по полю и несущая в руках светильник. То ли это прямой намёк на греческую богиню, которая встречает осенний сумрак, то ли это что-то более абстрактное…. Так или иначе, обложка весьма подходит содержанию. Но обложка – это всего лишь крайний кусочек всей картины, которую можно полностью увидев, раскрыв буклет вширь с титульной стороны. Оформление же второй, обратной стороны буклета, на которой напечатана лирика, весьма отличается от предыдущей картины и больше похоже на «попавшие в воду чёрные чернила». Оформление не столь богато, но даёт всю нужную информацию и даже имеет свой концептуальный дизайн. Который, впрочем, имеет меньше явных параллелей с музыкальным содержанием альбома.
«Luminosity» - очень хороший альбом, многие композиции которого хочется слушать не раз и не два. Но, тем не менее, чего-то кардинального нового или оригинального здесь нет. Hegemone комфортно чувствует себя в Post-Metal, и, не встречая серьёзных преград, реализуют много своих экспериментов. Но Black Metal основа чувствует себя очень робко и достаточно фрагментирована, несмотря на явное желание банды двигаться в этом направлении, выраженное в весьма подходящем, сыром и отчуждённом звучании. Что касается сравнений, то это, безусловно, Cult of Luna, Altar of Plagues и, совсем отдалённо, Isis.
